In December 2016, the Hon. John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC), announced significant changes to the procedure for sponsoring parents and grandparents to come to Canada as permanent Residents.
Under the new procedure, those wanting to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada will now have 30 days to fill out an online form to indicate their interest. IRCC will then randomly choose 10,000 individuals and invite these people to send in their complete application package. Those invited to apply will have 90 days to submit their complete application to IRCC.
The first step in the sponsorship process is to notify IRCC that you are interested in sponsoring your parents/grandparents. On January 3, 2017, the Parent and Grandparent online form opened to the public. The online form and instruction for completing it can be found at this link.
Interested sponsors have until February 2, 2017, to notify IRCC of their interest. At the end of this time period, 10,000 entries will be chosen at random. Those selected will be invited to submit their application to sponsor.
If you are interested in sponsoring a parent/grandparent, do not delay in completing and submitting the online form. It is likely that failure to submit a form will mean a sponsor will have to wait until 2018 for the next draw.
